“7 Steps To Online Selling Success”

OK Here’s The 7 Steps On How To Sell A Product Online

Alright lets generate more online sales for your business the seven steps we’re going to cover are:

Step 1:  Understanding Your Market and  Where To Reach Them
Step 2:  How To Create An Irresistible Offer
Step 3:  Create Your Marketing Message

Step 4:  Pick Your “Promo” Vehicle
Step 5:  How To Promote Your Offers Online
Step 6: Engage and Service

Let’s get stuck into Step 1 which is…

Step 1:  Understanding Your Market and  Where To Reach Them

This first step on how to sell your products online is understanding your market and where to find them and by them I mean people that are looking at buying your product or service.

This is the most important step and yet it is this step most product owners and promoters don’t dedicate the amount of time that is required to really understand their market and identify their client profile as well as knowing where to reach them.

Knowing this will stack the odds on how to sell online successfully and will provide you with a road on how to sell your product online.

I remember the story of great marketer and copywriter Gary Halbert.  Gary was speaking at a seminar and he asked the audience

“If you were to open up restaurant what would be required to make it successful or profitable?”

Those in the audience responded with:

Great location! Great food! Excellent service!  Reasonably priced food!

And whilst he acknowledged that these are all valid he said that none of these would matter without having starving crowd.

So true , isn’t it..

That’s why it is so important to understand your market thoroughly and what makes them tick what are their pain points and what solutions can you provide to those pain points.

“It’s about entering the conversations in their minds and understanding their behaviors”

By doing this first step you are going to find you’re hungry crowd and paint a picture but what they look like, what makes them tick and where to reach them.

So how do we research your client profile?

It’s about really 3 things:

1. Geography

2. Demographics

3. Psychographics

Geography (Physical / Online)

it’s about knowing where they (your audience or market) are located not only physically i.e. their location, town, city etc. but also where they spend their time online for example what social media sites they frequent, what forums are they are active and are a part of etc.

Here are some geographical questions to ask yourself about your audience:

  • Where are they locate? – Are they Local, National ? International? (Google Trends Tool Will Give You An Indication)
  • What sites does your audience frequent online. Think of forums, social media sites, online groups like Facebook groups , Buy and Sell groups or even meetups.

(Knowing the answer to these questions will give you the intelligence you need to know where to reach your audience online for free and also using paid advertising strategies, which we will cover later on in this post.)

Demographics

Next we’re going to look at other attributes like their age by gender it marital status their income and their occupation education levels, employment status household size in what stage of the life there at maybe they’re retirees for example or just entering the workforce this is known as your audiences demographics.

Here are some questions to ask yourself about your audience’s demographics:

  • What are age are they?
  • What gender? Male or Female – Does one gender have more of any affiliation with your market than the other?
  • What is their income bracket?
  • If you are marketing to families find out their house hold incomes? Do they own their home? Are they renting etc..
  • Do they have a college or university education?

A great tool to help you with this is Facebook’s Audience Insights ( I believe you need to have an advertising account set up
to get access. Another tool is Quantcast.com.

I use Data JEO it’s a very powerful tool and very cost effective. I have reviewed the product and you can see a demonstration here.

Psychographics

And the final piece of identifying your client profile and understanding your market his knowing more about your audiences attitudes, values, lifestyles, how they behave, what influences them and what are their interests and motivations are.

Here are some questions to help you along:

  • What is your audience is core concerns and problems?
  • What are the top 5 goals?
  • What keeps them up at night?
  • What are the top 3 daily frustrations?
  • What are they interested in?
  • If you were to get into their minds and their hearts what is it that they secretly want and truly desire and once you work this out
    you’ve got the key!
  • What influences them – are  they influenced by their peers? Do they like to keep up with the Jones’ ?
  • Are they influenced by rock stars,  celebrities,  religions and politics?

Here are some other ideas on finding more about your market and audience:

  • Join related meetups, clubs and associations and chat to your target market in your area.
  • If you have a client list or customers already use a tool like SurveyMonkey.com  and ask your customers what their wants and challenges are?
  • Look at your competitors and where and what they are advertising and who too. You can track this by using tool like Google Alerts it will allow to track mentions of their business online. (Also a good tool for you to use!).
  • Look at Q & A sites like: Quora.com | Yahoo Answers | AnswerThePublic
  • If you are selling physical products look at the reviews on Amazon paying special attention not only to the 5 star reviews but more importantly the lower ratings which will help you identify gaps that you can offer with your product.

This is also great market intelligence  when looking at  angles to market your product or service online

I know I spent a lot of time on this first step but as I mentioned at the beginning this step is critical especially when communicating your marketing message to your target audience.

Step 2:  How To Create An Irresistible Offer

How-To-Sell-A-Product-Online

The second step required on how to sell a product online is to create an irresistible offer. Now that you have an understanding of what your market wants and your market needs and you know where to find them online it’s time to put an Irresistible offer in front of them.

It’s no secret that everybody likes  to get a great deal and this is why it’s so important in the way that you position your offer to your audience.

Creating your irresistible offer will also shape your marketing message which we’re going to cover in the next step.

The tips I’m about to reveal to you will have some crossover with the next step.

Creating your Irresistible offer comes down to understanding what makes your audience tick and what creates their desire to have your product or service.

You can see now why the first step is so important!

In my opinion the makeup of an Irresistible offer is driven by your audience’s wants and desires combined with the benefits of what your product is service can offer them.

Remember if you are selling a drill that’s not what your customers are buying they are buying the hole in the wall, the result.

How do you sell a product online and make it irrisistable?

You can make the offer of your product or service irrisistable by :

  • Understanding your customers needs, wants and desires as discovered in step 1.
  • Focus on the benefits of your offer – The Result!
  • Add Exclusivity – For example can they only get the product from you?
  • Add Value: Something that’s done in the internet marketing and make money online niche is the offer of bonuses. Let’s say I am selling a drag and drop website builder, to make my offer more attractive I can include a bonus centered around free traffic generation strategies to get more visitors to your website.

Many years ago Aeroplane Jelly grew their sales significantly by having their sales people going door to offering a free bonus booklet on how to make jelly and different jelly recipes for their customers to try. It provided the end user with great value , but their was one thing missing…  the jelly!  The packets of jelly flew off the shelves and found their way on thousands upon thousands desert tables across the country.

QUICK NOTE: Adding value is another way of adding exclusivity ,especially if your bonus is exclusive to you.

I remember when I got my Weber BBQ as a wedding gift It came with online tutorials on how to use the Weber BBQ to cook flavorsome breakfast , lunch  and dinner meals by giving you barbecuing recipes and tips and tricks to get the most out of your Weber.

Think about  how you can add exclusivity to your product or service you will only be limited by your creativity and imagination.

Step 3:  Create Your Marketing Message

OK so let’s move on to step 3 which is creating your marketing message. This is where you need to engage , connect with and educate your audience. You will want to build the desire for your audience to take action and buy your product right?….

After all you have read this far  because you would like know how to sell your product online!

A Time Tested Formula:

A I D A which stands for

Attention:  Get your audiences’ attention

Interest:     Generate interest in learning about the benefits on offer and how it help them (What’s in it for them)

Desire:       Create a desire for the your audience to own the product or service

Action:       Get your audience to take action. i.e. Purchase

Here are some tips to help you construct your  marketing message:

  • Speak the language that your target market understands and use the appropriate jargon relevant to your audience.
  •  Communicate a big promise of what your product will do for them again and focus on the benefits and more importantly the results they gain as a result.
  • Communicate with your audience what life is going to be like for them using your product or service. This is known as future pacing let me Illustrate this with an example:

This example is from product that created years ago called Learn to dance salsa in your living room.” which originally started as a DVD or even further back is a VHS cassette tape now it’s available online in a membership site.

Imagine being able to walk into a salsa club ,whether it’s local or abroad and not only have the confidence to ask others up to dance but also looking great on the dance floor when dancing.

Wouldn’t that be great?

Or what about if you could enter the social dance floor with confidence wowing not only the person you are dancing with but also those watching with exciting steps and nice looking salsa moves.

How would that feel if you could do this?

Imagine having people line up waiting to dance with you because you not only ooze confidence and come across as good dancer who can either lead or follow but are also fun and a blast to dance with.

It truly is possible, but you need to know how.

That’s what this learn to salsa video course could help you to do.

You can see the full sales letter /marketing message by visiting: http://www.letsdancesalsa.com/learn-to-salsa-video-course/

  • Explain your offer focusing What’s in it for your prospect , the benefits and the results they can expect.
  • Create scarcity and urgency for example in your call to action hurry order now stock running out or free 1 hour consultation for the
    first 27 people etc
  • Add credibility by adding social proof in the form of testimonials from satisfied clients and case studies.
  • Offer a 30, 60, 90 day money back guarantee – this shows you stand behind your product.

I have briefly touched over creating your marketing message and the tips that I’ve given you just to get your creative juices flowing so you can put your marketing message together.

I will do a future post on copy writing so keep an eye out for that in the meantime I will make a resource available for you that will show you how to create copy that sells your product online simply click here to get instant access (No opt-in required).

Step 4:  Pick Your “Promo” Vehicle

how-to-sell-a-product-online

So now in step 4 on how to sell a product online  we are going to focus on picking your sales vehicle  to communicate your newly created marketing message to your target audience.

In my opinion these three methods are still the most effective ways to market your product and services online.

  • Online sales letter on you your website.
  • Video sales letter
  • Webinars what I considered to be the best online sales conversion tool there is.

So what you’re basically going to do is put your marketing message on a web page to create your online sales letter.

Then convert the marketing message of your sales web page into slides and present it as a video sales letter or a live or recorded webinar.

You have all seen what a sales page looks like. If not refer to my learn salsa as mentioned in step 3.

But what both the video sales letter and the webinar has an advantage in, is that it has the visual, audio and text component which helps you better connect with your viewers because it taps into the auditory, visual and sensory modalities of us humans.

That’s why video in known to  increase and know, like and trust factor for those viewing your video sales letter or online webinar presentation.

Both methods are also very good if you need to demonstrate a product such as a software or a device.

Another method  used by affiliate marketers and product owners and reviewers are unboxing videos this is where they will make a video of a product  and I taking it out of the box explaining the packaging, features and the benefits of the product etc..

There are many people online  make videos and posting them on sites like YouTube getting a ton of traffic to their offers and making sales.

A SPECIAL NOTE ON WEBINARS:

Here are some facts about using webinars to sell a product online:

  • Webinars sell high ticket items and programs ranging from $297 to #10000 dollars plus.
  • Webinars convert at least 10 x more visitors than a website – if you receive a 100 visitors to your website, most websites will convert one person in 100 visitors -a 1% conversion rate a webinar on the other hand will convert at LEAST 10%. That 10 visitors.
  • Webinars can be automated and hence done once and replayed over and over again think of it as your 24/7 online sales person.

In this next step we’re going to go over how to promote your offers online.

Step 5:  How To Promote Your Offers Online

Now that you have decided on your sales vehicle you now have to promote your offers to your audience. Here are what I believe are the best paid and free methods for getting more people to connect with you and ultimately more sales.

Facebook  Advertising:

Facebook is an online giant with an estimated 2 Billion active monthly users. The Facebook advertising platform allows you to put your message in front of your target audience. The platform really allows you to really drill down and target your audience based on location, likes, interests and all of the other attributes we spoke about in step 1.

The other thing about the Facebook advertising platform is that it allows to re-target those that have visited your site. You may have experienced the re-targeting feature yourself –  have you ever visited a website looking for a product to buy and then suddenly you see the same product come up again in your news feed or another site you are visiting. – Very powerful!

The other thing about Facebook I like is that it allows you to create custom audiences and look a like audiences. These are both topics that deserve a dedicated blog post.

You can upload your data base to Facebook and then they can go out and create a “Look a Like Audience ” , so Facebook will go out and find an audience with same/similar profiles of your data base.  I have provided two links above with some more information on both custom and look a like audiences.

With all promotional efforts you need an underpinning strategy  – what’s your objective or what are you trying to achieve.

When you create your Facebook Ads be sure to:

  • Have an engaging image or video
  • Good copy and call to action (refer to to step 3)
  • target your audience based on what you discovered in Step 1.
  • Like all paid advertising start with a small budget say $5.00 per day and let the ads runs for a minimum of 72 hours.
  • If the ad is producing sales then scale up.
  • If you ad is not producing revisit and tweak and try again – Test things like the headline , your call to action , an image or video ,your copy
TIP : Only change one of the above elements and track the results. Also the most clicked call to action Facebook button is the Learn More button.

Take the time to learn how to effectively use Facebook ads to help you sell more of your products online.

Google / YouTube /  Bing Ads / Brandzooka

Google and Bing Ads are established paid advertising platforms that have been around for many years now. The are still very powerful and like Facebook Ads please take the time on how to use them properly.

Both Google and Bing will still be responsible for bringing you traffic from a target audience. Please be sure to use the above mentioned Facebook tips in your Google and Bing Advertising.

Using the Google Adwords platform you will also be able to advertise on YouTube (which is owned by Google).

Money Saving Tip: Look on line for Google Adwords and Bing Ads coupons. Both companies will offer coupons where you get a discount like buy $100 of advertising for $25 dollars for an example.

Again be sure to test your ads first with a small budget and then scale up the winners.

Another platform I have come across recently is a self service site called Brandzooka . Brandzooka allows you to put your video ads on the top 100 sites  like CBN, New York Times, Sky.com , Google.com .MSN etc. and you can get started for as little as $50.00 and it also offers some great targeting features that allows you to engage with your audience locally and internationally.

Paid Online Press Releases:

Paid Press Releases can be very powerful and I still use it today in my business. If you are launching a new product to the market this a great way to get exposure.  What’s important is to make your press release news worthy and you want to grab attention of your audience.

I have used press releases in the past and in one of my campaigns I was able to get 106 new customers in 24 hours to my brick and mortar business bringing me over 14K in revenue. But that’s a story for another time….

When writing your online press release remember to write for the search engines. By this I mean make it humanly readable in that it makes sense but include your main keyword in the title /headline.

If you don’t know how to write a press release you can out source it. Here is one service I have used and has worked for me.

I have also used Presscable, com  you can use their platform and templates or have them write the press release for you.

Social Media Marketing

One question I always get asked is “Do I need to be on every social media platform?” (You will have found where your audience is in step 1)

My answer is no! You only need to be on the sites where your audience frequent. It’s more than likely a  given that you will find your audience on both Facebook ( Facebook Groups) and YouTube. The reason is that they are searching on these platforms.

The other thing to consider is the type of product are you selling will determine which social media platform will be more suitable for example if you are a real estate agent in addition to Facebook and YouTube you may want to have an account on Instagram or Pintrest  as both these platforms are visual and allow you to post pictures.

What’s important to remember when using social media – is that it is “social” here I would suggest to educate and entertain 80% of the time and promote the other 20%.

  • Make sure you post often with valuable information related to your market.
  • Create engagement – ask your audience to comment , to share your posts or tag their friends.
  • Run polls and surveys
  • Run Contests.

Your Own Website

Lets’ not forget our most valuable piece of virtual real estate, our website.

Make sure you use it to promote your products.  Here are few tips to help you along:

  • Blog about your product
  • Add a demonstration video as part of the blog post
  • Make sure your site and blog post are optimized for the search engines.
  • It is set up to build your database by having an offer for the visitors to subscribe to via an opt-in form.
  • Make sure you have a contact page and that your contact details are easy to find.

These are very simple tips and I am constantly surprised how many people haven’t set there website up to help promote their business, brand and products.

Step 6: Engage and Service

how-to-sell-products-online

I have put this step in because done right you will have customers for life.  When I was drafting this blog post I was thinking what has kept my customers keep coming back to do more business with me.  I narrowed it to a few things being:

  1. Trust – I was able to build rapport and trust with my customers and prospects
  2. I never mislead any customers and was always open and transparent.
  3. I checked in with them and engage them to see if they are enjoying my product or service. I would ask if there was anything more I could assist them with.
  4.  I nurture them and provide extra value to make them feel special.

And by doing the above not only was able to keep a customer but also generate referral business from them too.

In closing this post I want to ask you what can you do to engage with and provide better service than your competitors and what can you do to stand out?
