17 YouTube Video SEO Marketing Tips To Get More Traffic From YouTube

1.Create and Optimize Your YouTube Channel:

To create your YouTube Channel simply go to https://www.youtube.com/create_channel

It’s important to optimize your YouTube channel. Here are few tips to help you along:

Channel name

There are two schools of thought when it comes to picking a channel name for your YouTube . The first  Is to use your business name or secondly what your business does, for example; Perth Luxury Home Builder. In my experience what I have seen rank is naming your channel your primary keyword if it’s available. This makes sense to me because if I was searching for a luxury home builder to construct my home in my city of Perth I would input that search term into Google.

If you are an affiliate marketer , you can call your channel something niche related, for example if you promote fitness products for home gyms , you can call your channel ‘Home Gym Equipment” or “Home Gym Equipment Reviews “

Channel description

Your channel description should accurately describe what your  channel is about. Use your main and relevant keywords in your description. Make it interesting and engaging so that those reading want to know more about your channel. Ask them to subscribe to your channel or connect with you on one of your social media platforms. Complete the “About Section” by adding all your links to your websites and social media accounts. Engage in the discussions and comments on your channel as well. This shows activity and engagement which is what YouTube loves.

Channel Art

It’ important to  catch the eye  and create engagement of visitors to your  channel  with great visually appealing channel banners. Have one designed for you by a graphic artist. You can outsource this to sites like Fiverr.com, 99designs or use a free tool like canva.com.

2. Create Engaging YouTube Videos

Here are a few tips for creating engaging videos:

  1. Make sure you know your audience. Be sure to research what motivates them, what keeps them up at night, what their hobbies are, what buzz words or headlines would get their attention.
  2. Do your keyword research so that you can create videos that are targeted to your audience and speak directly to them .  Videos that solve a problem are very effective.

google-keyword-suggestion

A quick tip for doing keyword research is to use google suggestion – I simply left the the ‘s’ off the word videos ( if you leave the last letter off the last word of your phrase it will prompt more suggestions of what people in your market/ niche are searching).

This will give you other video content ideas you can create.

relate_google_searches

Then if you scroll down to the bottom of the search engine results page you will get a list of searches related to your search. This will give you more ideas on your content creation as well as identify long tail keywords you can use in your titles and tags when optimizing your videos.

Ubersuggest is an useful  free tool that you can use to give you more suggestions too.

  1. Create videos that are vibrant and full of energy. You don’t want to be monotone and boring.
  2. Simple webcam videos work well and if you are teaching you can use a screen capture video software like camtasia or screen-cast-o-matic to record a slide presentation.
  3. Have a script to follow.
  4. Use phone apps create and edit it your videos. If you are not techie, no problems you can outsource your editing to sites like Fiverr.com. (This will rid you of a lot of frustration and save you time.)
  5. Commit to recording your videos regularly. Remember more videos, more traffic and exposure.

3. Make Sure You Include A Call To Action (CTA) In your videos.

Be sure to have a call to action in your videos. It can be done at the beginning of your video or end.  You can advise them at the beginning that if they watch until the end you will give them a free report , consultation , software or a free gift related to the video. (This is known as a stick strategy ..it gives  the viewer and incentive to watch until the end.)

**Remember to make good on your promise and tell them how they can get access to your gift , free report etc.

This comes done to your objective. Is your intent to sell , build your list or channel subscribers or sell your product or appointment.

Here are some call to actions you can use:

  1. Subscribe Now
  2. Make An Appointment
  3. Call Today / Now
  4. Download now / Get Instant Access Now
  5. Buy Now
  6. Join my list
  7. Comment below

Here are some ideas on transitional  phrases to your call to actions you can use:

  • What I’d ask you to do now is…. Subscribe to my channel now by clicking the Subscribe Button
  • Call us today for a free sample!
  • Get your copy of …..
  • Get Instant Access To …

  • If you are open to learning more about ….(blank).. Simply – Call , get access to your free report etc.

  1. Optimize Your Videos Before Uploading Them To YouTube

Optimize your video file name to the keyword you are trying to rank for.

For example I ranked a video for a high end luxury home builder in my hometown of Perth, Western Australia.

In my keyword research I found the term Perth Luxury Home Builder was being searched. I named the video file Perth-Luxury-Home-Builder.mp4.

You can also use an underscore_ in place of the dashes.

I did this by simply right clicking on the video file and renaming the file to Perth-Luxury- Home-Builder.mp4

5. Use Keyword Rich Titles

Include Your Keyword In Your Title (Very Important).  In the above example of  my title would be Perth Luxury Home Builder.

If you are an affiliate marketer and you are making review video you you will put in the title your product name plus review.

For Example:Data JEO Review

Another tip would be to use curiosity in your title too to entice the visitors to click on your link.
In the Data JEO image above you can see that the top 3 results or used curiosity to drive the click and the first two were YouTube Videos.

6. Include A Clickable Link In The Description

TIP:  Make sure it’s in the first 2 lines of the description box.

Start the description with your keyword at the beginning and then add your website address in this format http://www.yoursite.com
(The “http://” makes the link clickable and will direct your viewer to your website or landing page).

  1. Write A  Long Description

The next step is to write a good description including your keywords and related keywords.

( A word of warning don’t over use your keywords in your description you don’t want to be seen as keyword stuffing.)

Write about 500 words and include links to your social media platforms and include call to actions – like asking them to visit your site or subscribe for updates.

Also at the end  if you are a business write your:

Company’s Name

Address

Contact Number

in this order and format.

You can see an example of a long description I have written here

  1. Add Your Keywords In Your Tags Section

how-to-use-youtube-tags

Be sure to include your tags. Your tags should include your title keyword and related keywords you would have found in your keyword research phase. Tags are important because just like the naming of your video file in step 3, the tags will tell Google and the other search engines what your video is about.

A strategy that has worked well for me is to use the Title of your video and variations of the title of your video as tags.

Let me explain using the image above that relates to a product review on Adult Guitar Lessons.

I can use the title adult guitar lessons review as one tag and then drop the last word off so my tags will be:

  • adult guitar lessons review
  • adult guitar lessons
  • adult guitar

And then the single words that make the phrase  i.e.

  • Adult
  • Guitar
  • Lessons
  • Review

I normally only use 10 to 12 tags at a maximum.

The most important thing to remember is to make sure your tags/ keywords relate to your video title.

PLEASE NOTE: ** When putting your tags in be sure to separate the tags with a comma (,).

9. Use Hashtags # In Your Title, Description and Tags

You can use hashtags in video titles or descriptions to ensure viewers find your video when they search for a specific hashtag.People are searching YouTube using hashtags be sure to include them.

Be aware don’t overuse them as it’s against YouTube’s Terms. You can read more about it here.

  1. Use YouTube Cards In Your Videos

You can use cards to add interactivity to your videos. Cards can point viewers to a specific URL (from a list of eligible sites) and show customized images, titles, and calls to action, depending on the card type.

Adding a card is very straight forward. After you have uploaded your video simply go to your video manager ,select the video and add the card.

  1. Use the Audience Retention Feature In YouTube Analytics

You can determine how long your video/s  were  viewed and which point they stopped watching.

Knowing this type of information can help you improve your video’s performance.

Let’s say you find viewers watch 1 minute and 56 seconds of your 3 minute video for example and you placed you call to action at the end of the video your viewers aren’t going to see it.

You will know to go in and adjust this by adding the call to action to your video earlier than 1 minute and 56 seconds.

check-your-audience-retention-rate-on-YouTube

The audience retention data over time will also allow you to gage the average watch times of your videos, which will indicate to you how long you should make them moving forward.

By tracking this you will save time as well as increase the opportunity to get more channel subscribers and help your video’s ranking within both YouTube and Google.

  1. Optimize and Create Engaging Thumbnails

create-and-optimize-your-youtube-thumbnails

YouTube gives you the option of either picking a thumbnail out 3 images they have chosen from your video. They (YouTube ) also give you the opportunity to add your own.

I will create my own because I believe it’s a great way to stand out in the search results and set you apart from your competitors and other competitive videos. In short you want the viewers eye to be drawn to you.

I have created my thumbnails using PowerPoint (allows you to save a an interchangeable jpeg file) and canva.com.

When designing your thumbnails think about what is going to invoke your viewers curiosity and entice them to click on your video.

Once great way is to use images of people . Check to see what your competitors are doing as well as keep an eye out when you are browsing the google and YouTube video results and make a note of is appealing to your eye!

Optimize your thumbnail name of your thumbnail image after the keyword you are trying to rank for and be sure to format it with dashes between the words. Eg: data-jeo-review.

This is a good practice to get into for all of the images you put online as it tells the search engines what your image is about.

rank-your-images-in-googleHere’s an example of how they can show up and rank in the search engines under Google images.

This is the Google images results of a product called Data JEO I was a partner in promoting and using this simple method I was able to rank 5 images in the first 17 results.

So make sure you do this and at times it’s these simple optimization tactics that can make a difference in the extra traffic you get to your sites and  your offers.

  1. Index and Share Your YouTube Videos On Social Media

This a very simple step . The first thing you want to do is copy your Youtube video link and go to a pinging service line Pingler.com   to alert the search engines and have your video indexed in the search engines so that they show up and start getting traffic .

  1. Simply enter your keyword
  2. Then your video url
  3. Select the appropriate categories
  4. Enter the captcha
  5. Ping.

Email and Share You video On Social Media  – YouTube makes it easy as it provides the buttons to do so.

15. Create and Optimize Your Playlists

Create-and-Optimize-Playlists

Use The Benefits YouTube Play Lists Will Give You

Creating playlists gives you a great opportunity to keep your viewer on your channel watching more of your videos, which is a good thing right?… Absolutely !

Use the optimization strategies and tactics you have learnt in the previous tips and apply them to your playlists. YouTube loves playlists and will reward you for creating them. This Tutorial will take you through on how to create a YouTube play List

The cool thing is that you can add videos to your playlist that you didn’t even have to create. You can add any videos from YouTube.
( I would advise creating your own or having a blend of your own videos and videos from other creators.)

  1. Create YouTube Video Link  Wheels

Creating video link wheels is a more advanced strategy and yet simple to implement.
Put simply you are going to link videos you have created to each other.  The diagram below explains it clearly.

how-to-create-a-video-link-wheel-youtube

This is a great video-marketing hack. I would suggest you use it in YouTube, because of YouTube’s domain authority.

YouTube is seen as an authoritative site and it has a lot of link-juice behind it.

Okay, so what we’re going to do is, we’re going to create this video link wheel and it’s basically created by having multiple videos , in this example, seven videos linking to each other in a specific way.

So, the six videos illustrated in light blue are your content videos.

These videos will act as lead valves to engage your viewers to listen to your message as well as push views to your other videos in the link wheel by linking to each other.

Then you’re going to have your money video, illustrated in navy blue in the middle of the diagram.

PLEASE NOTE: You can replace your  money video with your  website or a webinar.

Okay, now a money video is something that’s going to offer either a subscription, something to buy, it’s going to have a call to action.

Making Your Video Link Wheel

The way we’re going to link the videos  is that we’re going to link video one to video two, video two to three, three to four, four to five, five to six, and six back to one.

As you can see this here creates a wheel. your link wheel. But also within each of the individual content videos, the respective videos here, we’re going to put a link through to the money video, your site or webinar.

Okay, now these links are very simple. It’s the YouTube watch link. Okay, you would have seen these. Here’s an example of one of mine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OG0573PNTc

You have now  created your video link wheel and it’s very simple and very powerful and you can actually use this to rank your websites as well, not only your videos within YouTube.

Okay, so that’s going to provide a little bit more juice to your videos ranking in the search engines. Now, obviously, this will depend on how competitive your keyword is.

You can also use this method and link Multiple YouTube Channels too as discussed here.

A Quick Bonus Tip

To get even more exposure and traffic you can apply the link wheel method to other video sharing platforms. There are 2 other platforms I use and they are Vimeo and DailyMotion.
In my experience I find that both of these sites rank really well in search engines providing you use the above mentioned video optimization tips I have already shared with you.

17  Stream Your Pre-recorded Videos On  YouTube Live Events
